History
Roman Remains, Found in 1903
When construction work was carried out at the spa in 1903, it turned up Roman remains — a pool, and metal coins. That is the extent of what is firmly established, and it is enough to place Zvonačka Banja alongside Niška Banja, Gamzigradska Banja and Brestovačka Banja as a spring the Romans had already found.
It is worth being clear about what such a find does and does not prove. A pool and coins show use; they do not establish a continuous bathing tradition through the intervening centuries, and no such continuity is documented here. The spa as it exists now is a twentieth-century creation built on an old spring.

Bathing is spread across three pools: two indoor and one outdoor, all fed with the mineral water. Alongside them the spa keeps courts for basketball, football, volleyball and tennis, which tells you what it is really set up for — active family stays rather than clinical programmes.

Getting There
Getting to Zvonačka Banja
By car it is 344 km from Belgrade and about five hours: the E75 motorway south to Niš, then east on the Niš–Pirot road, and finally mountain road into the Zvonce area. The last part is slow, and it is not a drive to do for the first time after dark.
Without a car, Pirot is the transfer point — it is on the main road and rail corridor towards the Bulgarian border and is served by intercity buses from Belgrade and Niš. From Pirot it is a further 40 km to the spa by local bus or taxi; Babušnica, 30 km out, is the nearer town.
If you are travelling from Bulgaria rather than Belgrade, this spa is much less remote than its Serbian distance suggests: Sofia is closer to Pirot than Belgrade is.

Practical Notes
Come in summer if you want the outdoor pool. At 630 m the season is short and the evenings are cool even in July, so bring more than you would pack for a spa in the Morava valley.
Treat the journey as part of the plan rather than an inconvenience. Five hours each way makes a two-night stay poor value; either give it a week, or fold it into a longer route through the south-east that also takes in Niš and Niška Banja.
Do not expect English. This is one of the least internationally visited spas in the guide, and arriving with a few words of Serbian, or a translation app and patience, will make the stay considerably easier.
