Introduction

Why Visit Badanja

Badanja's water is 15°C and genuinely cold, so nobody comes to soak in it. Two springs of different character feed the spa, one sulphurous and one an iron water. It stands in the village of Donja Badanja in western Serbia, 33 km from Loznica and 108 km from Belgrade, and the road in is rough.

Badanja is a mineral spa in western Serbia, in the village of Donja Badanja 33 km from Loznica and 108 km from Belgrade. It is not a thermal spa, and the distinction is the first thing to understand about it: the water here is 15°C, genuinely cold, and nobody comes to soak in it.

There are two springs of different character. One is sulphurous, the other an iron water, and the spa's function is built on that pair rather than on heat. The setting is quiet to the point of being off-grid, and the road in is rough.

This is a small clinical place in a remote village, and it is worth a page because the water is unusual, not because it is a destination. If you are looking for thermal bathing in western Serbia, Banja Koviljača on the Drina is the one to choose.

Treatments

Two Cold Springs, Sulphur and Iron

The water at Badanja emerges at 15°C. Its total mineralisation is 0.82 g/l, its pH is neutral at 7, the dissolved gas is nitrogen-dominated with carbon dioxide up to 28 mg/l, and hydrogen sulphide is measured at 4.2 mg/l.

The two springs are used differently. The iron water is associated with anaemia and stomach complaints; the sulphurous water with rheumatism, arthritis, spondylosis and recovery after injury. Those are the traditional indications attached to each spring, reported here rather than endorsed.

Because the water is cold, treatment does not take the form of long warm bathing. The clinical work is done by the Special Rehabilitation Hospital "Boro Skorić", which has 25 beds — small enough that this is plainly a medical facility rather than a spa in the holiday sense.

Where to Stay

Where to Stay at Badanja

The 25 beds of the Special Rehabilitation Hospital "Boro Skorić" are the accommodation at Badanja. There is no hotel, and we hold no verified record of private rooms in the village.

If you are not being admitted for treatment, Loznica, 33 km away, is the practical base, and Banja Koviljača on the Drina — a far larger and better-equipped spa — is close to it.

Getting There

Getting to Badanja

By car it is 108 km from Belgrade and about an hour and a half, west towards Šabac and Loznica, then a further 33 km to Donja Badanja. The last section is rough, and it is worth checking road conditions before setting out in winter or after heavy rain.

Loznica is the transfer point without a car: it is served by intercity buses from Belgrade, and the remaining 33 km to the village is a local bus or a taxi. Services to a village of this size are sparse, so confirm the return before you commit to the outward leg.
