Why Visit Obrenovačka Banja
Obrenovačka Banja is the closest thermal spa to Belgrade — barely 30 km west of the capital, at the edge of the town of Obrenovac and directly opposite the town park. Its sulphur-rich, sodium-bicarbonate water was discovered by accident in 1898, when a well drilled for drinking water struck a spring that smelled of rotten eggs. The source is a mild 21.5°C hypotherm, heated to a comfortable 33–34°C for bathing in the recently reconstructed town bathhouse. It is a simple local day-bath rather than a resort — but as a half-day escape from Belgrade, nothing is closer.

Visiting Obrenovačka Banja
The spa's origins are a happy accident. In 1898 the mayor of Obrenovac drilled a 174-metre artesian well hoping to solve the town's drinking-water problem — and instead struck sulphurous mineral water. The celebrated chemist Marko Leko analysed it around 1900, rated it above Weilbach near Wiesbaden in Germany, and declared "Obrenovac is a lucky place." The historic town bathhouse (Varoško kupatilo), opposite the park in the centre, was reconstructed and reopened in recent years (works completed around 2018–2020) and now offers roughly 29 private bathtubs, two of them wheelchair-accessible. The water is traditionally used for rheumatism, skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, and gynaecological complaints; a visit means a soak of up to 20 minutes and, if you like, a drink of the water. Bathing slots are usually reserved in advance through the municipal utility, and the bath is busiest with local regulars. There is no hotel on site, so treat it as an easy add-on rather than a destination in itself — pair it with a walk in Obrenovac, or fold it into a drive west out of Belgrade toward the Kolubara valley. Getting there is genuinely quick: about a 28-minute drive (31 km) from the capital, with regular buses from Belgrade to Obrenovac. If you are curious about Serbia's banja culture but short on time, it is the most convenient first taste there is.
